Prof. Mika Kivimaki

Professor, University College London

I am an epidemiologist at University College London and University of Helsinki with special interests in behavioural, psychosocial and biological risk factors for coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and dementia. A detailed biographical interview, “Spotlight European Scientist in Cardiology” is available in Circulation 2012;126 (Oct 23);f97-f102, doi:10.1161/CIR.0b013e318277362f). Briefly, I am Director of the Whitehall II study, UK (since 2007) and also lead the IPD-Work consortium of 17 European cohort studies (since 2010) and the Finnish Public Sector study, Finland (since 1998). Reports from those studies include numerous papers in top medical journals, such as the Lancet, BMJ, Nature, N Engl J Med, JAMA, and PLoS Med and hundreds of publications in specialized journals, such as Nature Genetics, Circulation, Stroke, Molecular Psychiatry, Neurology, and Health Psychology. According to Altmetric Top 100 ranking, our recent paper on long working hours and risk of stroke (Kivimaki et al. Lancet 2015) attracted more media attention than any other cardiovascular disease study in 2015.
